Postmedia Awards 2024 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism to Ehsanullah Amiri

January 9, 2024 (TORONTO) – Postmedia is pleased to announce Ehsanullah Amiri as the recipient of this year’s Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism. Starting January 15, 2024, Mr. Amiri’s fellowship will include six months working at the Calgary Herald, and six months with the National Post in Toronto.

Ehsanullah Amiri

Mr. Amiri’s journalism experience includes contributing coverage on western military operations in Afghanistan for the Wall Street Journal, as well as a stint at the Toronto Star where he wrote on national and international affairs and immigration topics.

“The Michelle Lang Fellowship is something we are all deeply proud of,” said Lorne Motley, Vice President, Editorial, West, and Regional Editor in Chief, Calgary Herald-Calgary Sun. “It honours the important journalistic work Michelle did and continues to empower next generations of journalists to follow in her footsteps. We look forward to Ehsanullah joining us as this year’s fellow, and to the journalistic expertise and international perspective he will bring to the stories he covers throughout his year with us.”

Michelle Lang, an award-winning Calgary Herald journalist, died in December 2009 while on assignment in Kandahar, Afghanistan. She was the first Canadian journalist killed while reporting on the Afghan war.

Mr. Amiri is the tenth recipient of this fellowship, which began in 2010. Michelle Lang fellows engage in daily journalism and also work on a special project. Mr. Amiri will be focusing on an investigative project involving Afghanistan.

“It’s a great honour to be selected as the recipient of this fellowship,” said Mr. Amiri. “Coming from the country where Michelle Lang lost her life for reporting the truth, the program will be an excellent opportunity for me to continue reporting on things that matter to Canadians. I am excited to begin this journey alongside the talented National Post and Calgary Herald journalists.”

The Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism is a national fellowship awarded annually to a Canadian graduate from any discipline for the chance to apply his or her passion for writing and interest in current events. This fellowship includes a salary for the year, plus funding for a special project, as chosen by the fellow, on a topic of social significance inspired by Michelle Lang’s own portfolio of work. Funding for the fellowship is provided by the Calgary Herald and Postmedia Network, as well as the Michelle Lang Trust.
